From the recording Absurd Snacks
The Gentle Boxer : I had the idea to write a series of oxymorons. The
Gentle Boxer was the second in the series and as far as I’ve got (so far)
Lyrics
The Gentle Boxer
A world champion boxer lives in our street/He gives out hugs like my gran gives out sweets
One little baby eating rusks out her bib/Got scooped up and tickled with a jab to the ribs
He's peaceful and quiet and committed to love/If you ask him he'll tell you It's all in the
gloves
I get them commissioned from faraway lands/To make sure they fit I send 3D prints of my
hands
They're filled with down from new born chicks/Antelope leather and silk in each stitch
The intention I have when I step in the ring/Is to seek out the soul, to love and affirm
At first I thought what makes you a man/Was hitting the other guy as hard as you can
I built up my punch. I was strong. I was tough./But deep down inside I knew it wasn't enough
No one feels like they've ever been hit/In the ring I blow kisses, scented candles are lit
My trainer said I should snap. I should growl/But after three wins he threw in the towel/
My smile and my charm leave opponents off guard/A genuine feeling of love hits home hard
When I see tears well up in their hard man eyes/The soft touch of my glove reels in the prize
In no time at all they're down on their knees/We all count to ten. Winning's a breeze
The world champ said he'd seen through my tricks/He snuffed out the candles with a
flick of his wrist
His first punch landed right in my guts/Then he bent down and bit a large chunk out
ma gloves
The poor fella sniffed some down up his nose/The sneeze was felt in the first fifteen
rows
I could see the damage had already been done/An asthma attack aint too much fun
The ref had no option but to stop the fight/The poor guy wishing he'd not taken that
bite
The crowd went wild. With banners unfurled
UNDESPUTED BOXING CHAMPION OF THE WORLD
That was the last time I climbed through the ropes
I can take no further part in such a dangerous sport
